Actor David Bianchi is no stranger to indie cinema, especially personal ones that leave an impact—as seen by his recently-released “I Can’t Breathe” to honor the death of George Floyd and the protests that followed in his wake.
It’s impassioned projects like this, especially from figures that have attained Bianchi’s success, that let us feel an actor’s true compass. Bianchi is currently in a major recurring role on season four of Netflix’ “Queen of the South” and is soon to have a major recurring role on Tyler Perry’s “Ruthless” on BET. Most recently, David has seen commercial success in D.C’s “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.”
Now Bianchi has taken on his most ambitious spoken word film yet with the release of “Wade in the Water,” which he co-wrote and directed. He stars alongside Hollywood great and UK star Joivan Wade, who he co-produced with. Joivan is currently playing ‘Cyborg’ in “Doom Patrol” on HBO MAX and is widely known for his leading role on “The First Purge.” Says Wade during the film’s tense verse: “In London, Blacks can be a slave to the knife, but out here “don’t shoot” seems to be the words that are taking our lives, so we sing “Wade in the Water” so that struggle can die.”
In addition to Wade and Bianchi, “Wade in the Water” was also co-written by Llewellyn C. Radford II.
Bianchi spoke to The Movie Buff about the inspiration for the film, which he says hinges on the “current unrest in America and global Black history.” Said Bianchi, “Being black in America creates a constant state of uneasy fear. Micro-bites of racism affect your every thought. The first authority figure to call me a ‘nigger’ was my elementary school principal at age 6. Distrust and hidden anxiety are simply part of who we are.”
The film was produced by Wall of Productions and Executive Producers Joivan Wade, David Bianchi, Tafara Makopa, and Percelle Ascott.
