Cinema has always been considered an adequate medium to convey the needed message. At the same time, many filmmakers try to find ways to display the relevance to eye-opening messages. Many stories have been made that are based on man-kinds’ worst enemies, rage and anger. At the same time, many stories have tried to show both good and bad aspects of these. The recently released film “Taish” (meaning ‘rage’ in Hindi) is a thriller about anger and its impact.
As you expect in the Bejoy Nambiar-directed film, the story starts with a non-linear route. First, we introduce to the prime protagonists struggling with their disturbance. Their reminiscence explores what led them to reach the point of their current self-destruction. We get to see Pail (Harshvardhan Rane) in anger and in the pain of losing his love Jahaan (Sanjeeda Sheikh) to his brother figure Kuljinder (Abhimanyu Singh).
From this, we get to introduce to a big Indian wedding in London where meet Rohan Kalra (Jim Sarbh), along with his groom brother, Krish (Ankur Rathee). The wedding also get joined by their brother-like best friend Charmer Sunny Lalwani (Pulkit Samrat).
As the wedding starts, we see each lead is going through their problems, while Rohan finally takes a stand against the love of his life Aarfa (Kriti Kharbanda). In contrast, the bride and groom are going through their own set of fights. With the unexpected entry of Southall-based gangster Kuljinder in their house party, it brings along the past memory and its rage, leading to shocking and unpleasant events. The event turns the life of all the protagonists’ upside-down. The favor of revenge is the story’s crux.
The story is directed and written by Bejoy Nambiar, who he needs no introduction. He is one of the most stylish and creative directors today. With the scritp of “Taish,” he, along with Kartik R. Iyer and Anjali Nair, bring a compelling thriller that describes its title, rage, perfectly.
Like most of his films, stories start from one angle and merge into another, which works well. The screenplay of the film is tight with needed twists, emotions, and action. The point of revenge is well justified. The messages are loud and clear how rage and anger can impact the lives of all. While they have created “Taish” for mini-series and film, the full feature’s story is sharper than the series.
One of the critical aspects of the story is that it is very well balanced between all three different-minded lead protagonists. Even the female roles are placed in such a way that helps the film’s story to go forwarded right away. The dialogue by Gunjit Chopra and Priyesh Kaushik in the film is good, especially the Punjabi dialogues that give needed depth of authenticity to the dramatis personae.
With directing, Bejoy again brined his style from the opening fight scene to the entry of all prime roles is perfect from, each set to the film’s fitting background music. Cinematographer Harshvir Oberai does a fine job in wide and close shots of characters and London. The film’s coloring frames, impeccable usage of lights, and sharp camera angles make the movie smart and elegant. The film’s vision is well complemented by the spectrum of spirit and understated vehemence in Govind Vasantha and Gaurav Godkhindi’s background music and talented musicians and singers’ songs.
The film’s story is backed by the excellent cast, where every character is pitch-perfect. Like Rohan, Jim Sarbh brings down a right accent and depth to his role, and Pulkit Samrat as Sunny, who brings out the mixture of charm, rage, and anger entirely in his position.
Who stands out the best in the film is Harshvardhan Rane as Pali; from the first shot till the last, he surprises with his sense of emotion and acting. He reflects his inner-feeling of chaos and anger in the body-language. The way he walks to the way he talks is so perfect that one cannot find a flaw. Despite being a non-Punjabi, his dialogues and accent in Punjabi are quintessential. Pali’s character is always on edge, but helps balance his sense of emotion and camaraderie with Saloni Batra and Saurabh Sachdeva. The rest of the cast, including Kriti Kharbanda, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Ankur Rathee, is outstanding.
“Taish” is a compelling revenge thriller with twists and turns. The film shows the needed emotion and a relevant message on rage and anger. It’s a must-watch, even if you are not someone who enjoys thrillers. It has ton-notch direction and acting from the entire cast. If you like the early work of Bejoy Nambiar, this film is another addition to his excellent list. You can check out “Taish” in both Series/Film format on Zee 5 now.
