I recently discovered the enjoyment of short independent horror films on YouTube. Some are really good. Most are pretty bad. But the creativity and passion is there on all of them. One such treat is the “Siren Head” series.
The character of Siren Head was created by artist Trevor Henderson.
I fell into a wormhole one night doing research, discovering that Henderson’s creation has since exploded in an almost franchise like way. Numerous content creators have taken the monster and used it for a variety of videos. The best of which are the short films by Shutter Authority.
What I loved about the movies is the hopelessness of the situation. All take place in isolated locations with beautiful though desolate scenery enshrouding the characters. The color palate employed offers a truly unsettling vibe in its hauntingly real appearance.
The characters aren’t deeply developed and that’s okay. They aren’t anything other than victims. Each is out looking for photographic evidence of the rumored Siren Head; a fifty foot monster that communicates via ancient looking speakers where its head should be.
The monster itself is unique to behold.
Its gangly gait is unnerving. I loved the sounds of various sirens and alerts that spew forth from its head. It makes its presence known in a truly terrifying way. And Siren Head doesn’t need to eat its victims. It simply murdered anyone in its path.
There are three movies in the series. “Siren Head,” “Siren Head Returns,” and “Siren Head Strikes Again.” Each run under five minutes; and that includes a behind the scenes portion showing the viewer how the films were made.
I’ll leave links to all the videos below. I encourage you to check them out. They are quick, creepy, and well-made horror movies. I’m hopeful we haven’t seen the last of Siren Head.
