A24 is the production company behind horror films such as “Midsommar” and “Suspiria” which all subverted the horror genre, making horror an unmissable part of modern-day cinema. The latest horror film from A24 is “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” directed by Halina Reijn and starring Amanda Stenberg, Pete Davidson, and Maria Bakalova. Bakalova is most known for her Oscar-nominated performance in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
The film follows a group of uber-wealthy twenty-something-year-olds, who are hosting a hurricane party, and while they wait out the storm they play a harmless murder-in-the-dark game. The newcomer of the group Bee (played by Bakalova) is there, as she is the girlfriend of Sophie (Stenberg). She grows to suspect something is wrong when the first real dead body shows up everyone else thinks that too. Sophie has been away for a while, and when she reconnects with her best friend (Davidson) and an extended group of friends, all is not what it seems. It immediately becomes uncomfortable as old friends realize they don’t like each other anymore, and a night of grievances begins to spin out of control.
A Fun Slasher Film that Will Keep Audiences Guessing
This film is definitely categorized as a Generation Z slasher with a lot of the script written in Gen Z code — which has a razor-sharp quality filled with comedy quips and great set pieces. The film is all from Bakalova’s point of view, which is a good choice as she is the character that most will relate with. She is new to the group and has an outsider’s view on the events that unravel. However, even though there are a lot of terrible things that happen, there are a lot of opportunities to laugh at this group as well. The performance of Alice (played by Rachel Sennott known for her role in “Shiva Baby“) is a particular standout. She plays a narcissistic girl who only cares if people like her podcast, and wants to let people know how much work it takes to make a podcast.
The characters in the film all have their faults and all make bad decisions — so to watch a film that centers around this group would be a challenge. However, “Bodies Bodies Bodies” is so well made, and has a killer soundtrack which is used in the right places, that it creates feelings of tension and of a party atmosphere. The film is tense in all the right places; and even though the characters are challenging at times, the filmmakers make this a fun slasher thriller that will keep audiences guessing to the very end.
“Bodies Bodies Bodies” is currently only playing in theaters, but should come to streaming networks soon.
