Love has different significances in each person’s life; for some, it is just a word. For a few, it becomes a way of life. Humans show different kinds of love towards people around us. However, during February, the month that houses Valentine’s Day, it sets a different mood for all those in love or those who want to be in love. When we see a lot of influence of our love life come from cinema we have seen, it helps us connect to the emotion and teaches us a lesson we may have not thought of. Romantic stories from the ages teach us to be strong, to be all out for love, and no matter what, you will find what you want in the end—and even if you won’t, you will be called a lover. The most common thing about love that connects us is when it’s hopeless…where we see the odds stack up, and a chase chase to find the ultimate love that is there.

Valentine’s Day has passed, but romance films stay with us year-round. They can make us believe that each one has one right one waiting for them. These are the films that we have watched over and over again, yet it makes our hearts warm every time we see them. And there are those exemplary stories that make you think love is substantial; that even after you have been on many dreadful dates to persuade you otherwise. Following is the list of films that bring out the hopeless romantic in you.

Casablanca’ (1942)

If you like romantic films, then you can’t miss “Casablanca.” “Casablanca” is a virtuous magical encounter every time you see it. The story is about two old lovers who reconnect during WWII in Casablanca, and are torn between personal love and doing their part in the war effort.

The general crafting is filled with lines you can’t forget, and the black and white cinematography is timeless. The film has its continuing influence on other romance movies; if you haven’t seen the film, you are missing out on a true classic. (Read our review here). 

Roman Holiday’ (1953)

We all love to be out on travel and always hope to bump into a stranger who becomes part of us. “Roman Holiday” is a story about a young princess in Rome, tired of the paparazzi, who bumps into an American reporter, who gives her one of the best memories of her life around Rome. People who have seen it know that you wish to revisit this enduring classic repeatedly; and for those who have not yet seen the film, it’s a gem that you are missing.

“Roman Holiday” has all you want in a romance film: love, hope, romance, and fun along with great acting. It’s a perfect fit for a cozy romantic movie date.

When Harry Met Sally’ (1989)

“When Harry Met Sally” is one of the films that makes you feel good. The story is about a man and a woman who meet in a shared ride heading to New York City, and then meet again over time. It’s one of the films that make you realize the right one is in front of you while  you might be searching the entire universe for that one. The film gives us a lesson for love with some fun, light humor. The most impressive part about the film is the veracity and simplicity of the relationship between men and women and their intimate conversations. (Read our review here).

Love Jones’ (1997)

You can often connect with the one easily if the person loves what you love, and you feel like it’s a perfect match—but what if the odd changes and you are seeing that person going away from you? “Love Jones” is about Nia Long and Larenz Tate’s story. They find instant connection due to a situation on the verge of setting the relationship part. The film is a cult classic which you can buy or rent on YouTube.

Say Anything’ (1989)

You may have seen this film or not. However, you must have seen the iconic jukebox that the film shows, representing the hopeless love and showing the dedication that real feeling gives you. “Say Anything” is about the perfect girl meets an ordinary guy who is doing all to charm her. When he finally does that, they stay apart for a reason and what happens next is what the film is all about. The film has the best of John Cusack; it is a must-watch if you have not yet come across this fantastic rom-com.

Notting Hill’ (1999)

She was just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her…a line that no one will forget about this film of an actress falling in love with a commoner. The life of both gets changed, but does the love change? “Notting Hill” has a stellar cast, and Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant bring the charm. It’s a truly romantic story that makes us believe that hope is everything when it comes to love.

Dirty Dancing’ (1989)

A list without this film would be incomplete. This is one of the stories that needs no introduction. This timeless romantic movie has stayed in the heart of us ever since it came. It’s something that gives you a cheer and needed fire to set your mood on the romantic movie night.

Monsoon Wedding’ (2001)

Monsoon Wedding” is a long, joyous convergence of life, all of which occurs at a wedding in Delhi, India. The bride is facing doubts before an arranged marriage to an Indian man from the States. all around her; people face decisions and romance on their own; the film gives a strong message to you if you are a hopeless romantic by heart. A Walk to Remember’ (2002)

Nicholas Sparks has a significant influence on romantic films. “A Walk to Remember” is about a famous schoolboy who falls in love with the complete opposite. When he finds out she is ill, he does all he can to make her remaining time count. No matter how many times you see this film, it will always give you a hopeless romantic feeling. 

Brokeback Mountain’  (2005)

While we always heard that men meet women and live happily afterward, not in all cases. Some relationships are beyond our understanding; they represent the same thing that we call love, but still, we can’t see it. “Brokeback Mountain’s” story focuses on such love between two men who are set in a way that not many can understand their state of emotions. The film shows a beautiful representation of same sex romance.

Letters to Juliet’  (2010)

Letters to Juliet” is a sweetly romantic film. It follows the story of writer Sophie who comes across a letter written 50 years ago. When Sophie decides to respond to the letter, she finds herself on a passionate pursuit for veracious love.  The film is an excellent pick if you yet to discover it

Silver Linings Playbook’ (2012)

This film is one of the perfect examples of what happens when two flawed people find love together. The story also won Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar; the film is excellent and relevant today. It gives us the message that love might not seem perfect in our eyes. Still, it’s not about the looks of us, but of them. (Read our review here). 

About Time’ (2013)

About Time” is one of the films that is genuinely under-rated, the story-focus on a man who can go back to time whenever he wants; he uses this skill to meet the one he loves. As time moves on, does going back in time always help to set all the odds right? The story is fantastic and leaves us with a lesson for life that while we all want to go back to time and change it, it might be or might not always be right. The film is a new generation classic which will warm your night with your lover by your side. (Read our review here).

Loving’ (2016)

This film talks about the critical issue yet shows the real courage and strength of love based on the true story.

“Loving” is about a real interracial coupled who spent a long nine years fighting for their right to be together. The story is heart-touching and inspiring shows us that love has no boundaries.  

Cold War’ (2018)

If you are soft-hearted, then this film is not for you, as this film can tear your heart apart. The story is set in 1950 in Poland about a couple who are meeting at different intervals to each other; they love each other. However, the time and situation does not love them. The story will leave you in a state you don’t wish to go, yet it gives you hope in love, which you require sometimes.

Sylvie’s Love’ (2020)

The film is about Sylvie, who falls in love with a guy who works at her dad’s shop. When they reconnect years later, they know that only time has passed, not their love. The film is beautiful and gives you the feeling of hopeless romance you need.
