With an anticipated June 10th release, the “Jurassic World” franchise has dropped its first trailer for the upcoming summer blockbuster with “Jurassic World Dominion.” With a series that has been around since 1993, there’s always a high standard for success; but if the film’s trailer is any indication, it looks like it is checking all the boxes to bring the old cast and new together for an exciting ride.

The Cast

What is gripping about the new trailer is it brings back the old “Jurassic Park” cast and joins them with the new “Jurassic World” members. We have Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum; and of course B. D. Wong, who has managed to be in both franchises. Joining them are “Jurassic World” stars Daniella Pineda, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Chris Pratt, who have managed to be engaging in the franchise’s first two romps.

This casting is exciting for two reasons. Firstly, “Jurassic World Dominion” will mark the first time that Neill, Dern, and Goldblum have been on-screen together since the 1993 opener. Additionally, it’s exciting as it seems “Dominion” will be following other franchises (such as the “Terminator” franchise) in bringing old and new members together for an epic film.

The Story, Dinos, and more…

What’s also interesting about this upcoming film is that it’s nothing short of fan service, both in the bringing together of the old and new cast, and in its story and the inclusion of new, bigger dinosaurs while starring some oldies that never fail to please. A brief glimpse of the trailer shows the inclusion of, T-Rex and Velociraptors; and no “Jurassic Park” film would be complete without them.

There’s also the the addition of new dinosaurs, and the trailer has some exciting sequences were a “bigger” carnivore is present (Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm of course criticizing this in his usual dry, sarcastic way), and one dinosaur hunting a person underwater that is menacing to be sure.

We’re also interested in how this all plays out, especially given the ending of the “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” While I wasn’t overly pleased with “Jurassic World,” “Fallen Kingdom” was a more engaging film overall. Its ending (*spoilers*)—with actor Isabella Sermon’s character releasing an abundance of dinosaurs in order to save them—allows this film to make sense; and rightly it makes sense that the continued desire of man to “control” dinosaurs throughout the “Jurassic World” films smack right into scientist’s like Malcolm decrying this ability.

Expectations

Of course, all of this sets up heavy expectations. The opening 1993 films is iconic, and rests as one of many filmgoers’ favorite movie experiences. Seeing dinosaurs on the Big Screen for the first time was a big deal. And now, almost 30 years later, we’re seeing the combination of these old stars with the new, still fighting the same threat. We hope for a good story and execution. The film will doubtless feature much CGI and dinos; but if we have learned anything through “Jurassic Park” films over the years, it’s that this is not enough. It’s what dragged “Jurassic World” down, but allowed “Fallen Kingdom” to bring it up. There’s a chance here to have a very pleasing film (as we saw with “Terminator: Dark Fate” and how it brought its old and new characters together well), and we hope the filmmakers will take advantage of it.
