13 Going on 30” is a cute love story loaded with laughs. The film is perfectly cast. Jennifer Garner takes the lead and demonstrates her knack for playing adorable and quirky characters. Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer are excellent in supporting roles. It deals with being true to inner creativity as well as the horrors of high school.

The film plays on the often used “switching places” theme. Thirteen-year-old Jenna Rink is a high school nobody. Her only friend is the nerdy Matt, who of course is secretly in love with her. After reading a magazine article on why your 30s are the best decade of your life, magic happens, and voila! Jenna becomes Jennifer Garner.

Judy Greer and Jennifer Garner make a great pair

Set in New York City, the laughs are present immediately as Jenna reacts to this unbelievable situation. She shares a bed with a strange man, and works for the same magazine she grew up reading. Her adult social circle is confusing. Popular girl and tormentor Lucy (Greer) is now her best friend. Matt (Ruffalo) is no longer a part of her life. The magic with which Jenna transports to the future is acceptable. We aren’t supposed to dwell on the details. We simply accept what’s happened and enjoy the ride.

“13 Going on 30” thrives with its excellent cast. Garner and Ruffalo work perfectly together. We can believe they are soul mates. Best friends who drifted apart due to the rigors of high school popularity (or lack thereof). Jenna is well intentioned but misguided by her lust of being one of the cool kids. Garner looks gorgeous and down-to-earth. Ruffalo is a flawless everyman. Judy Greer is a nice choice as the antagonistic Lucy. She’s deceitful and conniving behind your back but always smiles to your face.

Before she did credit card commercials, Jennifer Garner was a movie star

Starting in 1987 and jumping to 2004, “13 Going on 30” has a great soundtrack. The iconic songs also play a part in some very funny scenes.

“13 Going on 30” is a very enjoyable film. It’s funny, touching, and has characters you’ll love. They don’t make movies like this anymore, and its a shame.
