I did a double take watching “How to Be Alone” when actress Maika Monroe from “It Follows” appeared on screen. She was great in that film, and proves again she has a natural ability to do horror.

This ten minute short was Written and Directed by Kate Trefry, whose credits include “Stranger Things.”

“The word womb means hallow….It’s a void.”

A woman (Monroe) is home alone (duh) and we can tell she has issues. Monroe serves as narrator, for what is happening on screen as well as the demons lurking within her mind. Her boyfriend (Joe Keery) leaves for the day. As she plods into psychotic breakdown, the viewers will witness psychological horror at its best.

Simple and effective

Maika Monroe is good at playing disturbed characters. She has a certain look that can’t be taught. Her narrations are perfection. “The word womb means hallow.” She coldly explains. “It’s a void.”

Maika Monroe is great at horror

The writing and directing are excellent at revealing the problems this character has through subtle clues. We get to experience how a person with mental issues lives. And be scared while doing so.

“How to Be Alone” is an excellent horror short. The acting, writing, and directing are top of the line. Here’s hoping we get more of Maika Monroe and Kate Trefry.
