Don’t let the goofy thumbnail fool you. “048” is a ten-minute short that will leave you with chills.

Filmmaker Luke Cloarec shows incredible attention to detail as he weaves a simple yet effective scary story. The tension of a peephole. The ambiance a melancholy piano brings. The inclusion of a creepy Mr. Bean poster. It’s all here.

Jake (Mason Sturgess) is awoken by a knocking at his door. Former significant other Sydney (Lee McLeod) needs help. She saw someone in her room and wants Jake to investigate.

Short and Sweet

“048” doesn’t have the time to dive deep into character backstory. We know Jake and Sydney were romantically involved and parted on less than amicable terms. When or why is never revealed, and there’s really no need. The viewer gets all the history of the pair with a silent elevator ride. The tension is so harsh you’ll forget it’s a horror film. The story is both sad and spooky.

Charlie Bettesworth and Emma Ljunggren complete the cast. The talent is young, and improvement is a low bar. The film itself makes up for any weakness in the acting. The entire movie is set in a hotel. It feels ominous for the entire run time, up to and including the great final shot.

“048” is a simple story filled with literal chills.
